Choosing your photograph
It's hard sometimes, getting a restless animal to sit still. And when it happens, it's not always in the position with the best light, or their tongue is out, or their lips are in their teeth, or their fur's in the wrong place. Believe me, I know!
The thing I always say to clients is to choose a photo they might love, their favourite. These are the photos that speak the most, have the most character, are the most treasured memories - and that, after all, is what I want to capture. I create pictures as memories. A family friend, for whom I drew the beloved "In Memory of Benji", says he watches over her from the hallway while she goes about her day.
Always remember, though, that I cannot draw from blurry photographs. Any taken with smartphones or digital cameras lose detail and focus in low light, so anything not in bright daylight, sunlight, or with a flash, will lose those precious details you know and love. While I may be able to make an educated guess at the way fur falls, I cannot know the details in your beloved pet's eyes. You will want to look into those eyes and recognise your best friend.
If you don't have a good camera, or can't get your animal to sit still, or if your pet has sadly passed and there are no good photos - don't despair! There is more that can be done.
Have a look through the photos below. Both "Shadow" and "Pepe" are examples of how I have pieced together multiple photographs to create a single portrait. In the case of "Shadow", an old pony who sadly passed shortly after the start of the commission, I used the pose from the old photographs of when he was young, because it was the best, and pieced together the details from his bridle, nose and eyes from clearer photographs taken in the months before he passed. With "Pepe", photographs I took myself as he trotted elegantly around the park, it was more of a preference of pose and lighting.
The same principles can be applied to your pet. Feel free to send over any and all pictures you have, and I can piece together details to make up a portrait you will love. After all, that is the magic of a drawing, compared to a photograph.

"Patch", Kent, UK. 2017
Small, single face (Limited detail to draw)

"Shadow", Kent, UK. 2016

Example of using multiple photos. I have used the pose of the oldest photo, and taken details on the bridle, bit, nose and fur on the second, and eyes on the third.

An example of using multiple photos to piece together an entirely unique image. I've taken the facial features from the sunlit photo at the bottom and applied it to the posture in the top photo.
